Course Duration

6 hours (2 x 3 hour session)

 

Target Audience

This course is for Registered Childminders and Childminding Assistants.

It is advised that childminders and childminding assistants who have not completed Health & Safety training before, or who completed Health & Safety training more than 3 years ago, attend this face-to-face course.

 

Period of Validity of Awarded Certification

3 years from date of completion of course.

 

Purpose of the Course

Upon completion, the childminder will have an understanding of their responsibilities regarding the health, safety and welfare of children within their care.  The course will examine the guidelines set by the regulatory and advisory agents and also teach the basic practical principles to ensure compliance and safety.

 

Course Learning Outcomes will include

Upon completion of this session, the childminder will have an understanding of:

  • How to keep and maintain a safe, secure, and sustainable environment for children in a childminding setting
  • Relevant legislation relating to health and safety at work
  • Identifying health and safety hazards and risks in a childminding setting
  • How to carry out a risk assessment
  • Potential dangers to children and how to prevent them
  • Fire Safety and Managing Evacuations 
  • Hazardous substances, Smoking and Substance Abuse
  • Dealing with Accidents/Incidents and Manual Handling.

 

The course will cover the following:

  • Introduction to Health & Safety in a Childminding Setting
  • Legislation and Standards – Minimum Standards
  • Health and Safety at Work
  • Early Years Inspection
  • Risk and Risk Assessment
  • Identifying Risks within Your Setting
  • Conducting a Risk Assessment
  • Specific risks associated with activities and environment
  • Fire Safety in a Childminding Setting
  • Introduction to First Aid, Accidents/Illnesses
  • What are your responsibilities?
  • Guidance in compliance
  • Introduction to manual handling and safe lifting techniques
  • Introduction to Food Safety and allergens
  • Introduction to Hazardous Substances, Smoking, Substance Abuse
  • Responsibilities and Best Practice Guidance
  • COSHH Risk Assessing
  • Substance/alcohol misuse and smoking
