Purpose of the Course

Upon completion participants will be aware of key nutritional messages within Nutrition Matters for the early years: Guidance for feeding under-fives in the childcare setting.

Course Learning Outcomes

This training will be delivered by Community Dieticians and specialist Health Improvement staff across Northern Ireland and aims to provide information and practical advice on a range of issues of relevance to those caring for the under-fives.  The training will introduce the updated Nutrition Matters document and enable participants to use the document to provide healthy choices in their childcare setting; as well as providing information on preparing a nutrition policy, menu planning and physical activity.

The training will cover the following topics:

• why good nutrition is important;
• weaning and nutrition for under 1s;
• balanced diet for 1-5 year olds;
• meal planning and nutrition checklist;
• how to meet the nutritional needs of children with individual dietary requirements, including those with medical conditions such as coeliac disease and diabetes, children ethnic minority  communities and children following a vegetarian diet;
• allergen labelling;
• food refusal;
• rewards and celebrations;
• developing and implementing a nutrition policy:
• promoting good dental health;
• physical activity guidelines for under 5s;
• Nutrition Policy.
