Course Duration

6 Hours (2 x 3 hour sessions)

This introductory course provides a foundation in the principles, values, and practice of playwork. Participants will explore the importance of freely chosen, self-directed play in children's development and wellbeing, and gain an understanding of the playworker's role in supporting and enriching play opportunities.

Suitable for those new to playwork, as well as individuals working with children and young people in school-aged childcare settings, community groups and school provision, this course offers a valuable introduction to the unique approach of playwork.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, learners will be able to:

  • Describe the role and responsibilities of a playworker.
  • Understand and apply playwork theory to practice
  • Explain the significance of play for holistic children's development, mental health and wellbeing.
  • Identify and apply the Playwork Principles in practice.
  • Recognise the importance of children's right to play.
  • Understand the concepts of risk and challenge in play environments and how to manage this effectively.
  • Demonstrate an awareness of intervention styles used in playwork settings.
  • Contribute to the creation of inclusive play spaces that meet the diverse needs of children and young people.
