Upon completion, the practitioner will have gained an understanding of learning disability and how to support children and their families/carers.

- Understanding the terminology surrounding learning disability
- Understanding the range of services that may be available and the appropriate pathways for access
- How to welcome the child with a learning disability into the setting, plan for inclusion, and have strategies to promote inclusion
- The importance of taking a child-centred approach
- The importance of working in partnership with parents:
- An insight to the family’s journey
- Dealing with diagnosis/the unknown
- Challenges and barriers
- Ensuring their involvement in the delivery of services
