Upon completion, the practitioner will have gained an understanding of learning disability and how to support children and their families/carers.

learning outcomes:

  • Definition of learning disability and complex needs
  • Understanding the terminology surrounding learning disability
  • Understanding the range of services that may be available and the appropriate pathways for access
  • How to welcome the child with a learning disability into the setting, plan for inclusion, and have strategies to promote inclusion
  • The importance of taking a child-centred approach
  • The importance of working in partnership with parents:
  • An insight to the family’s journey
  • Dealing with diagnosis/the unknown
  • Challenges and barriers
  • Ensuring their involvement in the delivery of services
