Course Duration

6 hours (2 x 3 hour sessions)

Target Audience

This course is aimed at Practitioners who have previously completed the Paediatric First Aid Certificate and whose certificate is due to expire.  Practitioners are advised to complete a refresher course up to three months before the expiry date of their current certificate.  Where this is not possible, a refresher course must be completed within 28 days of their certificate expiring.  This course is 6 hours and will bring your First Aid Certificate up to date. N.B.  In preparation for this refresher training; please read previous full Paediatric First Aid course manual/material prior to attending this training.

When applying, you MUST insert the expiry date of your current certificate on the application form.  You must bring your current certificate (or a copy) with you on the first evening, otherwise you will not be able to complete the course.

Period of Validity of Awarded Certification

3 years from date of completion of course.

Purpose of the Course

Upon completion, the trainee will have updated their understanding and competence to deal with a wide range of medical issues that can arise when working with babies and children. The course will meet the current (at time of delivery) legislative first aid requirements.

Course Learning Outcomes will Include

The trainee will understand how to deal with a range of medical issues including:

• Initial assessment
• How to use an EPI Pen.
• Resuscitation for babies up to 1 year old; children 1 to 8 years old; and people over 8 years
• Choking in babies and children
• Recognise the dangers in an emergency situation
• Casualty management
• Managing an incident
• Recognise and respond to types of children’s injuries
• Recognise and respond to childhood illnesses
• Contents of First Aid Box
• Recording and reporting of accidents and incidents.
