Makaton Language Programme Designed to provide functional communication and encourage and develop language and literacy skills through the combined use of signs and symbols with speech, the Makaton Language Programme enables children and adults with learning and/ or communication difficulties to interact with others, become more integrated into family life, participate in society, gain independence, and to fulfil their potential.
Makaton may only be taught by a Licensed Makaton Tutor, using the Charity’s training programmes and resources. The training pathway consists of workshops for Levels 1 - 4 which each cover 2 Stages of the Core Vocabulary of signs and symbols.
Level 1
The Level 1 Workshop gives a practical introduction to the Makaton Language Programme and how it may be used, and teaches you the signs and symbols from Stage1, Stage 2 and Additional part A of the Core Vocabulary: approximately 120 words/concepts to support communication about a person’s immediate needs and everyday activities.
No previous knowledge or experience of Makaton is required to attend Level 1 training.
Level 2
The Level 2 Workshop will teach you Stages 3, 4 and Additional Part B of the Core Vocabulary. These stages expand your vocabulary of signs and symbols designed to reflect basic everyday needs and activities and the workshop includes hints and techniques for using them effectively every day.
Learners must complete Level 1 before they can be enrolled on a Level 2 Workshop.
