Course Duration
6 hours (2 x 3 hour sessions)
Target Audience
Practitioners who are interacting and working with children in a childcare environment.
Period of Validity of Awarded Certification
3 years from date of completing the course.
Purpose of the Course
Upon completion, the trainee will be aware of/knowledgeable in their role and responsibilities as a childcare worker within the child protection framework.
The course will meet the current (at time of delivery) legislative requirements.
Course Learning Outcomes will Include
All information must be linked to Early Years policies and to the DoH Minimum Standards for Children Under Age 12 and, where appropriate, the ETI Guidelines.
The trainee will understand how to deal with a range of safeguarding issues including
- An understanding of their role and responsibilities as a childcare worker within the child protection framework using a child-centred approach and a trauma informed lens
- An awareness of the signs and symptoms of abuse and the contributlry factors of ACEs, particularly domestic abuse, substance misuse, neglect and mental ill heath in the family (using early years safeguarding/child protection scenarios)
- An understanding of the vulnerability of children with special/additional needs
- An awareness of current legistation, principles, policies, procefures and protocols on safeguarding and child protection
- An understanding of the role of social services
- Responding sensitively to a disclosure and making a referral to the Designated Child Protection Officer or Social Services as appropriate
- An understanding of what not to do
- An awareness of barriers to staff reporting child protection concerns and stategies to alleviate them
- Record keeping and communicating confidential and sensitive matters
- An understanding of the importance of own behaviour and boundaries
- An understanding of the role of the Designated Safeguarding Children/Child Protection Officer
- An awareness of supporting networks and the role of the Early Years Social Worker.
